Our horse Aspen had a severe barbwire injury to the cannon bone area of his leg and after the initial visit from the vet felt confident that our "then trainer" could handle the injury. When Aspen was hurt he was about to be dry loted because he was pretty seriously overweight. Our trainer stalled him for 6 months and kept both of his back legs wrapped in medical bandages and polo wraps also for 6 months. My daughter and my husband would go to the barn when his bandages were being changed but I stayed away because his injury made me so sad. She decided that to take weight off in a hurry he would only get one flake a day of Bermuda. We began to ask questions about his injury needing to breathe and spending at least some time putting weight on it walking in the pasture but she assured us that we were wrong and she knew what was best for him. Six months into his rehab we were all down breaking water in the barn and I swear if he hadn't been in our barn I would have never known that he was our horse. We immediately called our vet who was convinced that he had worms or a parasite he was checked for this and had neither, Our vet estimated that in six months he had dropped about 800 lbs. and was literally being starved to death it was the saddest day. Then he unwrapped his legs and his good leg has permanent swelling and the bad leg swelled so much that it I immediately ballooned with proud flesh until it burst in the front and back. Needless to say we got a new trainer and by the grace of god the vet took his case probono because he needed so much care. I spent that whole night surfing the web to find something to boost his immune system and put weight on fast. I put him on high doses of vitamin c, flax oil, senior feed and healthy oil, everyone told me I was wasting my money but when they saw the results of his weight gain and major improvement in coat and general improvement in the way he felt everyone was a believer, they told me he would never gain weight in the winter because he was in such poor shape but he did gain weight and he gained it quickly. Within 2 weeks it was obvious that he was really doing better. We are now a year out from an injury that should have taken 4 to 6 months to heal but he can finally run like he loves to do. Health I oil saved him and he loved it. He may never be 100% but he is our baby and whatever he can do is fine with us. We are now boarding a friends horse that he had, had at another place and was not getting grain and living in a mud hole, our friend was quite upset and moved him to our property. He has filled out some but needs his teeth floated badly, but he is afraid if he does it before he puts on some weight and then has his dental work and might be sore for a while. I think my recipe with Aspen would really help because I make it into a mash and I think he could handle that and not drop too much grain. Here is my mare who improved the most, she came up from Missouri and was underweight and looked horrible, she had NO energy and was pretty much lifeless we didnt know where to turn. After a couple months on health e oil, her hair coat changed, and she gained weight. She is a picky eater and nothing worked, we tryed everything and we mean EVERYTHING.
